The west coast of Mumbai and Haji Ali.

The Dargah Sharif at Haji Ali

Inside the dome.

The shrine.

The guidebook said that it was only possible to get to Haji Ali at low tide, as the causeway is flooded during high tide. Using our knowledge of when the most recent full moon was, we were able to deduce when high and low tide would be. Unfortunately, the guide book did not mention that the mudflats stank and that the best strategy is to go as the tide is on its way out (so that you can’t get stuck).

A Jain temple.

In addition to the main room shown above the Jain temple was full of smaller shrines and sanctuaries. When the worshipers left a shrine, having lit some incense or made an offering of scented oils, they backed away so as not to show the idol their backs. Once out of the shrine they would ring a bell suspended from the ceiling. According to a practitioner we met there, the bell is supposed to help you clear your mind, as it is difficult to have too many distracting thoughts if all you can think is BELL!

Statue of Shiva on Elephanta Island.

The Gateway of India.

The tour book ranked other restaurants with $s but this place with ¢s. It was delicious.
